My first proper Lego set (not counting a couple of those Basic sets, and a bit of Duplo), and judging by what remains of it, I was probably a bit too young still... I've made up for it by buying two since, and 'restoring' the original (this involved about 95% new pieces...). It came out in 1982, and Lego would do a few Mail sets over the first half of the 1980s, but sadly the theme got dropped in later years, with the odd Postie coming out in those six-packs of Town figures, alongside the surfers, dune buggies and other XTREME nonsense the line degenerated into. Shame... It's a sweet but functional model. The van model itself is a nice, functional box van, the only real fault being that letters and parcels just get chucked in the back. Still, I can't think of a better way of storing the stuff, so I probably shouldn't bitch. What really makes it is the yellow/red colour scheme, and those whacking great big Deutsche Post stickers. Marvellous stuff, and Lego Postmen just look incredibly cool, so having one of these thrown in, as well as a post-box and those lovely dinky little letters, is marvellous. Aside from the marked panels and the post-box, the parts for this one are quite common. The kit can be converted into a different truck (say, a pickup) with only a few additional parts. The best thing is that the design can be copied in a variety of colours, which means with generic car pieces you can soon build an army of vans. You know, if you want to =) I don't think it's just nostalgia to say this is a nice little van. It can be fairly pricey for something of this size (I've seen them reach £10 on ebay), but if you have a Postie figure, you can use Bricklink to ferret out the letterbox and panels, and then the rest is easy to find stuff. A nice little kit. Review
