SYNOPSIS

Rom has decided to gather as many allies as possible for a decisive battle against the Gyandlar. With Leina, Drill, Jet and Jim on the road again they find a battered Battle Rock named Marus in a forest and take him for medical attention in the nearest town. He can't remember how he got there though he has intermittent memories of being attacked by the Gyandlar. They hang around as he goes back to his building work where Leina is almost killed by a falling iron bar before Marus saves her. She's quite taken by him and visits him again at the site that evening. They chat but are ambushed by a Gyandlar squad lead by Diondra. She claims Marus is one of the soldiers in her army. This triggers memories of him being captured and experimented on by the Gyandlar. Rom arrives to help but Leina is captured by Diondra. The stress of the situation causes Marus to suddenly turn into a mindless monster. Even Diondra seems taken aback, but she is then transported back to the Gyandlar ship with Leina. Rom tries to reason with Marus but the latter prevents Jet from giving chase before running off himself. Rom follows him into the woods where he finds Marus back to normal and making more sense. Rom tries to persuade him to help by pointing out that they may be able to return him to normal if they defeat the Gyandlar. He agrees to help Leina but only if Rom promises to kill him the next time he changes.

Marus heads towards the landed Varigale-X where he is met by Diondra and her troops. He demands they hand over Leina but instead she attaches a headband to him that will give the Gyandlar control of his rampages. She tries to provoke him into changing before Garudi strikes on the idea of threatening Leina, triggering the transformation. The Gyandlar unleash Marus - now grown to giant size - on the city where he causes a huge amount of destruction. Diondra has Leina tied to a pole to keep him angry. Baikanfu battles him while Jet rescues Leina. Baikanfu is able to smash the crystal on Marus' chest, causing him to explode. A fragment of the crystal falls into Leina's hands as she mourns his death.

NOTES

Marus uses a modified Battle Rock model - as well as his crystal, he's basically got a human head under the familiar helmet.

Considering the complete disconnect from the plot and style of the episodes before and after this one - including the lack of any of the Yamilan crowd such as Pro Truck Racer or Tough Trailer - I'd theorise this was intended to be shown earlier in the season but held back and given a hasty introductory voiceover to hide the reshuffle.

REVIEW

A hugely disappointing return to the earlier vague quest format with the usual leads and the same predictable fables. Once again it feels like we've missed an episode as the important stuff - Rom coming up with the strategy of gathering warriors - happens off screen.

We're not even allowed to know who he's actually after this time and it looks worringly like the idea is another excuse for the Famous Five to wander around random feudal settlements.
