SYNOPSIS

Rom's group are helping relocate the people who lost their homes from the volcano but the convoy comes under attack from the Gyandlar in the middle of the Red Desert. The desert is so hot that straying from the road causes instant destruction - something Drill and Jet use to see off their attackers. They come to a raised bridge over an acid river, halting their progress. Rom jumps the bridge in Flex but is attacked by Rock People. He knocks them into the river, though it has no effect on them. He lowers the bridge and they cross to the fortified city of Yamilan. They aid the city's residents with the defences - just in time, as Garudi and Diondra launch a massive attack, believing the city to contain the Hyribead. The first wave is driven off, though city leader Kendô Robo confides to Rom that they have run out of ammunition.

There is a depot in the Red Desert. Jim, feeling useless as Leina's independence grows, volunteers to go and fetch it but Kendô Robo and Helitanser go instead, leaving Rom in charge of the defences. Jim follows anyway and saves the pair from a Rock People attack. Back at the city Leina feels guilty about Jim going on such a dangerous mission. The party are attacked again at the depot - Helitanser holds off the attackers while Jim and Kendô Robo fetch the ammunition. At dawn the Gyandlar make a renewed attack, with Devil Satan 6 battling Baikanfu as Jet and Drill try to fend off the troopers with improvised weaponry. However, soon they are forced back. In the nick of time Jim arrives with the ammunition and the defence is renewed. Covering fire from the city gives Baikanfu an opening against Devil Satan 6 and the Gyandlar retreat. Leina apologises to Jim and thanks him for his help.

NOTES

This episode follows on directly from the previous one for once. Gadess is beginning to rust due to the lack of Hyribead. Jim does Rom's big "You don't deserve to know my name!" speech complete with entrance music, kicks a Geiger Rock and then tells Kendô Robo he always wanted to say it. It's awesome. Rom learns some sense and just goes from Kenryû to Baikanfu straight away this time.

Shuttle Robo, Tough Trailer and Big Truck Robo are seen as part of the convoy, which is a lot smaller than the one seen last episode - evidence of previous Gyandlar attacks or just lazy animation?

Anime Clichés: Leina seems to give Rod Drill a Chinese burn. Jim blushes when she kisses him too.

Errors: Why does Rom risk jumping the bridge in Flex when Jet and/or Shuttle Robo (or any other Jet Tribe member inside the trailers) could just fly across? Once again, the Gyandlar seem to independently target the exact place Rom & co have just arrived at. Again the Varigale-X makes TARDIS noises - it's very weird.

REVIEW

A good fun actioner with some real heart. It's nice of them to realise Triple Jim's been useless so far and actually do something about it. The episode goes some way towards redeeming the character.

Add into that some nice big fight scenes where the regulars aren't the be-all and end-all and the result is a nice episode.
