A steady, reliable Guardian, Van Guard (often informally referred to as Van) was among those defending Gobotron when Cy-Kill and the Master Renegade launched their invasion. He was captured and imprisoned on a damaged Command Center, but later freed by Sparky and Scooter. Van Guard later served on Earth with the Command Center 1 crew, helping in the recovery of the psychic boy Shaun - though an encounter with Block Head left him encased in concrete up to his neck. Presumably his team-mates remembered to go back and free him, as he was later assigned to guard Cy-Kill on Elba. This didn't go to plan, as Royal-T and Street Heat turned against them and the pair were imprisoned. They were freed by Matt Hunter, though, and were able to exact some revenge with help from Turbo.

He later helped Leader-1 and Turbo flush out the miniaturised Renegades wreaking havoc with Command Center 1's computer system. Van Guard was serving on Gobotron when Cy-Kill attempted to replace the Guardians with his own copies. He was surprised by his own double and neutralised, but later escaped thanks to Scooter and Small Foot, and helped foil the Renegades' invasion. He was also present on Earth when Cy-Kill tried to unleash an electromagnetic neutraliser on the whole planet. Along with Leader-1, Van was instrumental in disabling the weapon. Like most Guardians, when not battling the Renegades he took his turn helping construction work on Gobotron.
