COMBAT CONTROL
  Code Name: BLACK MAJOR

The Black Major was one of the most enduring and popular of the Battle Action Force characters, despite (or perhaps thanks to) being a complete bastard. He not only got to be Baron Ironblood's useful 2IC, but he got a flashback strip detailing his origins as a member of Action Force, and also got to stay on as a recurring villain, leading the remaining Red Shadows after the Baron reinvented himself as Cobra Commander. Not a bad showing, really.

The figure itself was a recolour of the 1982 Action Force mail-in Commander figure (which would continue to serve as a mail-in for the 1983 range, albeit with a Z Force-style red cap).

The scheme used is very slick, and performs the difficult trick of making him stand out from the other Red Shadow figures without losing the feeling he's part of the same unit - it's basically the trooper colours reversed and simplified. If there is a criticism it's that he's perhaps a little too simplified, being nearly all-black. Add into that the usual paint wear issues affecting the shoulders, cap and (especially) the skull motif, and the Major can end up looking very bland if not taken care of.

The figure was originally supplied with an AK-47 (as well as a Red Shadows code book), I think the exact same one issued with the original Cobra Officer. The larger weapon doesn't really suit the straight arms, though, so I've switched it with a pistol. Despite being undynamic, the Black Major is a decent figure, though one of the ones where it's really worth stumping up a bit more for a near-mint example as a bit of paint wear can leave him looking very generic.
