|Code Name: SHOCKWAVE|
From about 1987 onwards, the G.I. Joe line went too far into silly, and only a few new characters really worked. Shockwave was one of them - after all, elite S.W.A.T. members would make logical additions to the G.I. Joe team, especially with their urban combat and anti-terrorist experience. Because of this sensible background and a surprisingly subtle figure, the character gained a cult following despite limited media exposure. As with Tunnel Rat, Hasbro even used the Resolute comic packs as an excuse to put out a new figure of the guy.
And very lovely it is too. Shockwave is decked out with a fantastic S.W.A.T. uniform, and the blue colour scheme really works. Initially I was unsure of the yellow in the camouflage pattern, but in the plastic it really works. Add in a cool balaclava-clad head cast and an armoured jacket, and he looks fantastic.
It doesn't stop there, as Shockwave not only has a removable cap but includes two alternate helmets - a dark blue bone-dome and, best of all, a gas mask for storming buildings. The latter can be a little tricky to get on - I'd recommend popping the head off the neck joint before adding it, then clicking it back on with the mask fitted. Shockwave also comes with a pair of holstered pistols - blue, naturally. It seems churlish to complain, but it's really figure that needs more accessories - a backpack and a larger gun would round out the look. I've kitted him out with a submachine gun, but he's crying out for a shotgun like Flint's. However, Flint has that one and he's one of the few characters more awesome than Shockwave, so he isn't getting that.
Still, these are problems that can be sorted out fairly easily with spare accessories, and aren't exactly fundamental problems with the figure - better they skimped there than on things which can't be easily borrowed from other figures. Even if you don't have the parts to fully round him out, Shockwave is nevertheless a superlative figure, and well worth the slightly higher price tag he commands compared to most other 25th toys.
