|Code Name: CLUTCH|
Clutch was one of the original thirteen G.I. Joe members. As the guy packed with the VAMP armoured car, one might expect he got short-changed by the associated fiction in the way that Grand Slam and Steeler were. However, while never reaching the omnipresence of Hawk, Snake Eyes and Scarlett, he was one of the few other founder members to get a few meaty roles in later years. Sadly, these roles were largely as a sleazy sexual predator intent on molesting Scarlett. Conversely he was much more likeable in the cartoon despite only appearing in a handful of episodes.
The 25th Anniversary version was also packaged with the VAMP, though it was slightly updated. Clutch himself is nicely done, with the flak jacket and bearded mug giving him a modicum of individuality when lined up with the other original members. At the same time, it's a shame they didn't at least give the option of the tan colour scheme seen on the VAMP II release and in the Sunbow cartoon.
In common with the rest of the original roster figures, Clutch is actually well-armed, with a removable pistol in an ankle holster and a knife in a sheath mounted on the hip. However, neither of these fit that solidly. This isn't a problem in itself, but it becomes a problem when he's used with the VAMP. Careful engineering means Clutch fits nicely in his designated vehicle, but be prepared to spend a lot of time shaking the thing upside down to get the pistol and knife out whenever you remove him.
Overall, Clutch captures the look of the original nicely enough, but doesn't actually have a huge amount of impact as a figure. Considering that getting an example loose can be expensive, you're best of going for the whole VAMP package.
