|Code Name: DESERT SCORPION|
The basic Vipers were a sensible upgrade for the basic Cobra Troopers, while some of the specialist types like the Tele-Viper and Strato-Viper were logical. However, as the line went sillier the Vipers did too, hence the Techno-Vipers, Toxo-Vipers, Moto-Vipers, Gyro-Vipers, Night-Vipers, Frag-Vipers, Stock-Aitken-Waterman-Vipers and so on. So it was nice to come across a halfway sensible later Cobra trooper in the shape of the Desert Scorpion.
Something about the design just clicks - maybe the way it bears more than a passing resemblance to near-namesake Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. But no, taken as opposition to Dusty (right down to the fabric neck cowl), the Desert Scorpion really does work. The design's a bit different but still possible to take seriously, while at least the colours make some sort of sense for a desert trooper.
The original accessories were missing from my example, but considering that they largely consisted of an overcomplicated backpack array I don't consider this a great loss.
The futuristic look means the Desert Scorpion is a good one for sticking some of my weirder spare bits, so he's got a brown Lifeline backpack, a Rise of Cobra (Destro?) submachine gun and some sort of clip-on blaster, the origins of which are a mystery to me. Overall, though, for a 1991 figure the Desert Scorpion is surprisingly subtle, and certainly one of the more interesting specialist Cobra troopers. Worth a look, as I doubt they're very expensive to find.
